SUBJECT: December 2022 PTSA Newsletter

December 5th, 2022
2022 - 2023 School Year - Volume 17, Issue 4

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time to the school and/or PTSA. We really could not do all of our events and activities without you!

There are lots of exciting activities, events, and volunteer opportunities to read about in this month's newsletter.

Due to your generosity during Grand Ridge's Apple Cup Food Drive, we were able to fill two cars with necessary pantry and food items for our local families in need.  The 5th Grade Leaders had a GRAND time putting this event together and celebrating a little friendly cross-state rivalry, all while benefitting the Issaquah Food Bank. We appreciate all of your donations.

On behalf of the PTSA at Grand Ridge Elementary, we hope you and your family have a safe, warm, and memorable Winter break.

Congratulations Reflections Finalists!

Thank you to all students who submitted their original art for the Reflections Art Program

All participants were recognized for the work at a reception in November and you can see their work in the overlook above the library. At the reception, the finalists that were selected to move to the District competition were announced.

Congratulations to: Eric Zhang, Karen Chen, Lana Elmusharaf, Deeya Chokkapu, Arya Shitikond, Iva Upadhyay, Arjun Iyer, and Cruise Skokos in the Visual Arts category. Ruofan Han in Photography. Kiaan Chopra in Film. Anika Iyer in Music Composition.

Thank You Art Docent Volunteers!

The first couple of months of art projects have gone really well and we couldn’t have done them without your help!

Starting in January we will be bringing back clay art projects. In order for us to get our clay projects up and running we will need more art docent volunteers for prepping the clay and for help in the classroom.

If you are interested in helping, please email:

Tara Sengamalay (tlvilling@gmail.com) or Kathryn Pilapil (katdren821@gmail.com) - Co-Art Directors

Parent Playground

Parent Playground will begin in January! This is an opportunity to join your student at their lunch recess. It will happen on the first Friday of every month, beginning January 6, 2023. In order to join your child at recess, it is required that you be volunteer approved. The volunteer approval process can take several weeks so please plan accordingly and get your application in soon!

PTSA General Membership Meeting

The next PTSA meeting will be held on January 23rd in the Grand Ridge Elementary School library at 7pm. All PTSA members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Grand Ridge Cultural Club

Grand Ridge Cultural Club is an optional recess program that brings in parent volunteers to share their cultural heritage and customs with hands-on activities, games and crafts from a specific country or culture.

Students have the opportunity to "visit" another country and learn about different cultures during recess on Thursdays during our rainier months! This is a fun way for kids to get to know different areas of the world.

In order to start Cultural Club again, we are looking for country "hosts" to sign-up to lead on a Thursday for three 20-minute recess sessions (Noon - 1:30pm). Learn more and sign-up here!

  • Wear a helmet if you are going to ride a bike
  • Walk your bike in all designated crosswalks
  • Please do NOT park/drop off in the spots in front of Grand Central on Park DR.  This space is not actively supervised by our Safety Patrol staff and student safety is our #1 priority
  • Onsite supervision for arrival begins at 9:00 AM.  Our Crossing Guards will be at their posts by 9:00 AM to safely cross you and your child/ren
  • Cross only in clearly marked crosswalks and follow the directions of our Safety Patrol Staff. They are committed to your safety.
VOICE Mentors Needed

Grand Ridge is in need of parents/community members who can volunteer up to 60 minutes each week to provide support for a student who has been prioritized to receive a mentor. The VOICE Mentor Program connects ISD students with mentors for one-on-one social, emotional and academic support.

All mentors receive training before being matched.  Mentoring sessions are held at school during school hours and can include playing games, helping with school or just having a great conversation. Supportive relationships matter – Grand Ridge currently has 6 students on the waiting list. Please consider volunteering.  Visit the ISD website to Learn more about the VOICE Mentor Program.

Is Your Student Missing Something?

The Lost & Found fills up quickly. If your student is missing something, please direct them to check the Lost & Found. The Lost & Found will also be made available at Grand Central on Wednesday afternoons for families to check. Unclaimed items are typically donated twice a year (December and June).
