Grand Ridge Celebrates Science
March 2021

The Grand Ridge PTSA is excited to sponsor a celebration of science this month.
Every Grand Ridge Grizzly has what it takes to be a successful scientist and we hope the events and focus this month these events help spark their imaginations! Sign up for one of our four live events and participate in our science prize drawing. 

 

Students: Take a minute to share what excites you most about science:
Is there a problem you want to solve? An experiment you want to try? 
A discovery you want to make?

 

Submit your comment, along with your name and grade here: Science Celebration Prize Drawing and you'll be entered in our science celebration prize drawing!

 

One entry per student, submit by Mar 31. Winners announced April 2. 

 

Wednesday Events

 

Investigating Chemistry - March 10 - 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
40 students max - 3rd, 4th, & 5th Grade Students (other siblings listening in is fine)

Chemicals are like people—no two are exactly alike! In this class, together we will investigate "mystery chemicals" and identify them based on their unique properties, ranging from solubility to flammability. This chemical exploration emphasizes problem-solving techniques and laboratory safety skills. Topics include chemical reactions, changes in state, chemical safety and properties of compounds. No supplies needed but we will send some digital materials for students to follow along with and help the instructor solve the mystery chemical challenge. 
 
Indoor Star Party : Tour of the Solar System - March 17 - 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
40 students max - 1st & 2nd Grade Students (other siblings listening in is fine)
If space is no longer available, there is a wait list form you can select.
 
Take a planetarium tour of the universe without leaving your seat. These Zoom based programs are an instructor led screen shared experience traversing through the night sky and beyond. Students go on a customized tour of the solar system with stops at the planets, their moons, and the sun as they learn about earth’s place in the universe. Students will go on to learn about motions of our seasonal sky, the tools that help us explore, and the history of space exploration. No materials needed. 
 
Live Zoo Tour - March 24 at 1:30pm PST 
Presented by San Diego Zoo
100 students max - all grades
The San Diego Zoo is WOLRD FAMOUS and our Grand Ridge Grizzlies have the chance to go behind the scenes with a Zoo Educator for a live tour of the Zoo. This tour will include time for interactive Q&A and a live, narrated walking tour of the Zoo. If we can't travel there in person, this is the next best thing!
 
Planetary Geology - March 31 - 2:00-3:00pm
100 students max - all grades
Take a wild virtual ride to explore the planets and moons that make up Earth’s neighborhood, the solar system. Explore these unique landscapes, and see deep craters, magma filled volcanoes, giant seas of methane, and icy oceans. This event will be recorded and available to watch (or watch again and again) for a week following the live event.
